Balloons Utilized to Smuggle Cigarettes Shut Down Lithuanian Airport

Recovered contraband balloons
At least 11 of the weather balloons, carrying 18,000 packs of illegal cigarettes, have now been retrieved

Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them entered the country's airspace.

Aviation Problems

The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.

National Security Measures

Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.

Up to 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.

Smuggled Items Retrieved

A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.

Cross-Border Contraband Trend

Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."

So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.

Neighboring Country Impact

Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.

Smuggling Techniques

In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."

Border Protection Aims

Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."

International Concerns

These airspace violations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.

Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
